Frequently asked questions
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I type sad (ص) on the Arabic 101 keyboard?
Press the W key — sad is reached by your left ring finger from the top row.
What does "emphatic" mean for Arabic letters?
The four emphatic letters (ص ض ط ظ) are pronounced with the tongue pulled back and slightly down (pharyngealisation). They sound heavier than their non-emphatic counterparts and affect the colour of nearby vowels — "a" near an emphatic sounds more like "ah".
Why is sad considered hard for English speakers?
English has no emphatic consonants. Learners typically pronounce sad as plain 's' at first; the distinction is built up through repeated listening and practice. The good news is that even a slightly-emphatic sad reads as Arabic to native speakers.
