TL;DR
Arabic Typing 101 supports both desktop layouts: Windows Arabic 101 and the native macOS Arabic layout. If you're on a Mac using the native layout, set your variant to “Mac” in Account → Preferences (we auto-detect it at signup) and the lessons and on-screen keyboard match your real keys.
Want maximum cross-device compatibility instead? Choose “Arabic - PC” in your Mac settings — that's the Arabic 101 layout. See Arabic 101 vs 102.
Why typing Arabic on a Mac can feel different
When you add Arabic on a Mac you'll see three options: “Arabic - PC” (the Arabic 101 layout used on Windows), “Arabic” (macOS's native layout), and “Arabic - QWERTY” (a phonetic mapping). The native layout keeps the top and home rows in the same spots as Windows, but it rearranges the entire bottom row plus a couple of keys near the right.
The result: letters beginners use constantly — like د، ذ، ة، و، ر، ز، ط، ظ — land on different keys. If you train on the Windows layout and then sit at a Mac using the native layout, your muscle memory will feel slightly off. The fix is simple: practise on the layout you actually use.
Which letters move
| Physical key | Windows Arabic 101 | macOS Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| Z | ئ | ظ |
| X | ء | ط |
| C | ؤ | ذ |
| V | ر | د |
| B | لا | ز |
| N | ى | ر |
| M | ة | و |
| ] | د | ة |
| , | و | ، |
| . | ز | . |
| / | ظ | / |
| ' | ط | ؛ |
| ` | ذ | ـ |
Note the last five rows: keys that type the letters و، ز، ظ، ط، ذ on Windows produce punctuation on the macOS layout instead — so those common letters live elsewhere. The eight diacritics sit on the top-row Shift keys (Q through I).
How the course adapts to your Mac
- Auto-detection: we detect macOS at signup and pre-select the “Mac” variant for you.
- On-screen keyboard: every lesson renders the macOS Arabic layout, so the highlighted keys match your real keyboard.
- Accurate checking: accuracy scoring and the error heatmap respect your chosen layout — a correct keystroke never counts as a mistake.
- Switchable anytime: change it in Account → Preferences → Keyboard Layout.
How to set your variant to “Mac”
- Sign in, then open Account.
- Go to the Preferences section.
- Under Keyboard Layout, choose Mac (Apple Arabic).
- Start any lesson — the on-screen keyboard now matches the Mac layout.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Arabic keyboard on a Mac different from Windows?
It can be. macOS offers "Arabic - PC" (identical to the Windows Arabic 101 layout) and its own native "Arabic" layout. On the native macOS layout the top and home rows match Windows, but the entire bottom row (Z X C V B N M) plus a few keys near the right are rearranged — so letters like د، ذ، ة، و، ر، ز، ط، ظ land on different keys.
Can I learn Arabic touch typing on a Mac with Arabic Typing 101?
Yes. The course supports both layouts. Set your keyboard variant to "Mac" in Account → Preferences (it's auto-detected on Macs at signup) and every lesson, the on-screen keyboard, and the accuracy checking switch to the macOS Arabic layout — so the keys you press match exactly what you see.
Should I use "Arabic - PC" or "Arabic" on my Mac?
Pick "Arabic - PC" (the Arabic 101 layout) if you want the most portable setup — it matches Windows machines and standard Arabic keyboards. Pick the native "Arabic" layout if you prefer it or already use it; Arabic Typing 101 teaches both, so either choice works.
Do I need Arabic stickers on my Mac keyboard?
No. Macs sold in Western markets ship with English-only keys, but touch typing means you learn the positions by muscle memory and never look down. The on-screen keyboard in each lesson shows your chosen layout as you practise.
Where do the Arabic diacritics (harakat) sit on the macOS layout?
On the native macOS Arabic layout all eight diacritics sit on the top-row Shift keys in order: Shift+Q fatha, W fathatan, E kasra, R kasratan, T damma, Y dammatan, U sukoon, I shadda. The course drills these in the right positions for your variant.
